Hanson's Wilderness Lodges
|Welcome to Hanson’s Hideaway Lodge & Getaway North Outposts! Our independent family has been in the adventure tourism industry for four generations since 1926 and provides four seasons of all you need to reconnect with, relax in and interact within the wild.
Throughout these generations our traditional tourism packages have mostly been geared toward fishing and hunting, but as times continually change we adapt to offer more of what current generations want and expect from their outdoor adventures and in doing so we also continually add to a rich tradition of ecotourism activities and excursions as well.
Our guests come from all walks of life, places and in groups large and small. Our versatile yet ‘simple’ destination resort business model helps us to accommodate and offer our guests the best of what our natural surroundings have to offer.
With mainland and individual, remote fly-in destination options, all tucked far away from the hustle and bustle of today’s fast paced world, we set the stage for a primal experience that will last with you a lifetime. Contact us today so we can personalize the adventure that you have been looking for!

The Hanson family has been in the tourism and adventure travel industry in our beautiful region of northwestern Ontario since the 1920′s operating various camps, lodges and outposts in that time as well as offering many different options for our valued guests over the years since our lineage first arrived. We have always operated under a slow and stable growth model and made a point never to grow outside the carrying capacity of the land.
Fishing Location: Hanson’s Hideaway Lodge at Crow Lake is located at 49.19 degrees latitude, -93.94 degrees longitude and is 100km north of the U.S. border (with Minnesota). It is a one hour drive north of the border. Often we are asked “what is it closest to?” and we usually tell people we are a three and a half hour drive east from Winnipeg, Manitoba (driving through Kenora, Ontario on highway #1, then south on highway #71), basically directly between Winnipeg and Thunder Bay, Ontario which is on the western shore of Lake Superior a little over three hours to the southeast of us. This gives them a good orientation to where we are and also provides a bit of detail as to the remoteness of our beautiful region.
Our three outpost cabins that comprise Getaway North are all located to the northeast of Hideaway Lodge by air. Ajax Lake is the closest to Hideaway at 49.33 degrees latitude, -93.44 degrees longitude, 55km ‘as the Crow flies’. This is a 20-25 minute flight from Nestor Falls.
A little farther north of Ajax at 65 nautical km northeast of Hideaway is Beaverhouse Lake. Located at 49.57 degrees latitude, -93.40 degrees longitude, this flight is a little longer running around 30 minutes.
Miner Lake, being our farthest outpost from base of operations as well as a considerably longer flight time from Nestor Falls, is located at 50.22 degrees latitude, -90.94 degrees longitude and is a total of 240 nautical km northeast from Hideaway Lodge. The flight from Nestor Falls is around an hour and 25 minutes. There is also the option to fly from different locations (we suggest either Ignace, Ontario or Sioux Lookout, Ontario) to shorten flight times.
Accommodations: Your time at either Hideaway Lodge or Getaway North Outposts can be spent boating or jet skiing, visiting with friends and family, camping, participating in watersports (waterskiing, wakeboarding, paddle boarding, diving, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking or canoeing), fishing, hunting and many other wilderness based activities, and that is just when you are at the lodge, as there are lots of other things going on around town.
Nestor Falls, Ontario, Canada is a very unique, full service community located within the Lake of the Woods region of northwestern Ontario. Besides spending your days on the water, along freshwater beaches, cliff sides, relaxing around the cabin or trekking through pristine wilderness there are many other things to do while you are here in our company. With a variety of restaurants and bars, Provincial and local parks, souvenir shops, Basketball and Tennis courts, brand new Baseball diamond, outdoor skating rink (and frozen lakes!), a wide variety of well-maintained, four season trails throughout the local community and many local landmarks to discover there is lots to do for those looking to spend some time around town.
Boats and Equipment: Our rental boats are all 16.5’ in length and have 40hp, four stroke, electric start Yamaha outboard engines. They also include: swiveling seats, depth finder, paddles, emergency kit, life preservers and a 25 L, external gasoline tank. ALL gasoline is also included.
Guides: When requiring a guide to take you fishing, adventure touring, sightseeing or leisure cruising, there a few options available to you:
If you have your own boat and motor, or are renting a boat and motor from us, and wish to simply take a guide along with you to show you the area or find you some fishing holes then you can choose to do so.
You may also choose to use the guide’s boat and motor and ride along with them; this option lends itself to taking advantage of the familiarity the guide has with their own equipment.
If you have a large group requiring more than one boat and motor, the third option is to have a follow boat accompany the guide boat. This ensures the most efficient use of space in each boat. There is nothing worse while trying to enjoy your time on the water than an overcrowded boat, especially while fishing.
Along with their intimate knowledge of the area, you also have the option of having your guide prepare lunch; whether it be a pre-designated meal or having a shore-lunch with your catch of the day while fishing (everyone should experience a shore-lunch at least once!).

We are a four season destination at Hideaway Lodge. Our cabins are cool and comfortable in the heat of the summer and warm and cozy during the cold winter months. Each season offers its own distinct opportunities and activities, as well as showcasing the varied landscape and environments that an extreme climate such as the Boreal Forest region of northwest Ontario holds.
Getaway North Outposts operate between the months of early May until late October; cold weather, frost and bookings generally being the determining factor for open-up and close-up of the cabins. This varies slightly from year to year, but generally we open the cabins a few weeks after ice out in the spring and close them down for the winter after the last group is gone in the fall (generally after a hunting or fall fishing trip) and before the weather starts to get too cold that overnight frost starts wreaking havoc with the infrastructure.
